Helping a Pro Sports Team Post a Big Win – for TV Rights
Challenge
In one of the most high-profile and contentious television rights disputes of the past decade, Argyle’s Robert Gemmill represented a professional baseball team and its television affiliate as they fought for rights owed to them under a contract. With the league office dug in to oppose them, the media strategy had to simplify the client’s legal arguments, neutralize negative media sentiment, ensure key messages were delivered effectively following key court decisions, and also promote the client separate and apart from the dispute.

Solution
The strategy dictated going on the offensive, using a range of tactics on social media and news media channels alike – and all while protecting the image of the club and its owners from personal reputational damage. We attended court hearings in person and built relationships with media that helped them understand the client’s position and the nuances of the case that were not previously presented in the appropriate context.
Impact
The dispute lasted for years and demanded shifting strategies and adjustments to our approach that contributed to the client’s ultimate success.
